FLY FISHING'S
UPDATES

MAY FISHING UPDATE
The first two weeks of May was a repeat of the entire month of April.
Lots of cold weather and high water making the fishing difficult and
next to impossible. Finally this past week, the water level has receded
and the river is looking good and wadable once more. Lots of hatches
are coming off now and the fishing is exceptional. Hendrickson, blue
winged olives, caddis and a host of lesser insects are hatching during
the afternoon and evening hours. A good number of 18 to 21 inch trout
were taken this past weekend. The most productive fly patterns were the
Picket Finn with the orange body, the Ausable Wulff, Haystacks and blue
quills. Small green flashback emergers worked wonders on the slower
sections of the stream along Riverside Drive and the damned up section
above the Wilmington beach. Look for Hendricksons to continue to the
end of this month along with some possible March Browns and lots of
caddis. Lots of fish were stocked in the West Branch of the Ausable
over the past three weeks. Many in the 14 to 18 inch range.
